For our out-of-town family and friends,
we’d love for you to experience Saxony the way locals do. Here are some of our favourite places to eat, drink, and explore while you’re here.

Activities

  • Wander through Naumburg’s historic city centre

Stroll along its cobbled streets, admire the medieval architecture, and don’t miss the impressive Naumburg Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • Step back in time at the old Schulpforta (Nietzsche’s school)

This former Cistercian monastery turned boarding school is steeped in history and surrounded by vineyards and scenic countryside.

  • Enjoy the Saale River

Take a boat trip or rent a kayak to experience the river’s calm beauty and the lush nature that lines its banks.

  • Visit the Rotkäppchen sparkling wine factory in Freyburg

One of Germany’s most famous wineries — you can find a historic (massive) barrel and, of course, enjoy a glass (or two) of bubbly.

Eat and drink

  • Have a beer adventure at the Getrænkehalle

Discover a massive collection of German beers, from crisp pilsners to dark bocks, and pick a few to try. Hanni’s suggestion: the Sternburger. For a non-alcoholic option go for the Waldi & Baldi.

  • Taste local specialities

Indulge in a Thüringer Rostbratwurst, the region’s signature grilled sausage, or try Saale River trout (Forelle), a local delicacy.

Sole really enjoyed the MILANESA Shnitzel at Landgasthof Gieekau, but most traditional German restaurants in the area will treat you well: it’s hard to go wrong in this area.
